For the end of our tour, Kenji and I were invited to KXJZ in Sacramento to perform a live set on Capital Public Radio. We prepared special “unplugged” versions for a few of the songs. Our favorite is the closer, a drum-machine + organ duet version of “Starlet.” The full show is mixed in with a few album cuts as well as interview with CPR’s Nick Brunner. Go listen
here at capradio.org.

Kenji has rounded up a bunch of photos from our recent West Coast tour, saying “Alex and i headed out on the road to play some rock music around the western parts of the usa. we jumped into our rental in berkeley, ca, played a bunch of shows under strange/awesome/frightening circumstances, and returned 3400 miles wiser.” Giant teapots, telephone mics, roadside burgers, and more. Go

We had a fantastic time opening for Her Space Holiday last week at San Fran’s Bottom of the Hill. The highlight was inviting Brin’s 6-year-old nephew to join us on stage for our closer, “Young San Francisco.” (Devotees will recall that Levi is one of the stars of the
Young SF music video). The SF Bay Guardian wrote a thoughtful blog entry about the show with pictures
in a piece called “Boy In Static celebrates sweet suspicion.” The Deli Magazine was there too with a flattering
show review here.

The Noise Pop show at the Apple Store, my first gig as a “local” Bay Area band, was a very warm welcome. The room was packed even for our soundcheck. And my t-shirt color choice inadvertently disguised me as an Apple Store employee. It was the first time we’ve featured flute live. We played just before Yoni Wolf (of Why?), who brought a moving solo set on a Rhodes piano. Two different photographers,
Matthew Kowal and
Jonathan Hung, sent over a lot of nice photos. Check them out and read more after the cut.

Very excited that Boy in Static is invited to play as part of San Francisco’s
Noise Pop Festival this year. I will be playing at the Apple Store, opening for three fantastic acts - Themselves (Anticon), Rainbow Arabia (Minimal Vinyl), and Yoni Wolf of Why?. The show is hosted by
Terrorbird, and sponsored by
XLR8R. Show starts at 2 pm, and I’ll be on first, so get there promptly! It’s at the Apple Store in downtown Powell area, 1 Stockton Street. And did I mention it’s free?

Late Tuesday night, I got a call from my kind friend Marc Bianchi (Her Space Holiday), who had an unfortunate case of bronchitis. He asked me if I would like to take his spot performing Wednesday morning live on KEXP radio (broadcasting a special Bay Area show). Of course, I accepted. I rehearsed a last minute solo set into the early morning, preparing a couple new songs I have never played live (”Toy Baby Grand” and “Wartime Bachelor”). (
Update: This show is now
archived for listening here.)

We did two US tours with our good friends
Freezepop this past year. We did more harder-hitting, dance floor sets, and debuted a lot of songs from the new album
Candy Cigarette. This is a video from Indianapolis. It’s a new song called “Osaka” (lyrics based on the city in Japan, where we toured in 2007, confusing). Kenji gets to hammer out the Depeche Mode-inspired beats on this song. Watch it
at Youtube, or
at Vimeo, or below the cut.
